원인
- 부비동염(sinusitis) 감염L 이마굴(frontal sinus), 벌집굴 (ethmoid sinus), 나비굴(sphenoidal sinus)
- 중이, 유돌기(mastoid process) 감염
- 수막염: 영아나 소아에서는 수막염에서 확산되어 발생할 수도 있으며 이 경우 측두엽의 아래쪽에 잘 생기기 때문에 CT나 MRI의 관상면 (coronal view)에서 잘보인다.
대부분 척추천자를 할 필요가 없으며, CSF는 무균이므로 진단에 도움이 되지도 않는다.
치료
- 배농 + 항생제
- 축농이 소량이며 증상이 경미한 경우에는 항생제만으로 치료 가능

병원체[!^2]

Streptococci, Bacteroides spp., Enterobacteriaceae, S. aureus, S. anginosus group, Nocardia spp. (rare), Listeria spp.

부비동염(sinusitis)으로 인한 경우 사슬알균(streptococci)이 가장 흔하며 다음으로 무산소균(anaerobes)이다.
